Becoming a catdog person has been bumpy. There’s always the demand to choose sides. People really fought about it in grade school. Dogs were usually on the winning side. It still comes up in conversation and people ask me to choose.
I was raised by five cats: Winky, Cherry, Raz, Fatso, and Junior. For a few years they all lived in my bedroom so allergens wouldn’t spread to the rest of the house. Fatso and Junior were inbred but still lived long, fascinating lives.
Anko is not inbred and is the lone feline in this house. As a cat person, when I’d imagine myself with a dog, it was like this:
I think I fulfilled that dream:
It’s an out-of-body experience to stumble upon Anko and Yuki in repose. I can’t believe it’s the world I live in. They often fall asleep after a long stretch of staring at each other from across the room. But they never cuddle, at least while we’re awake.
I think a lot about how Anko is the only cat Yuki will ever really get to know, and vice versa. And then I remember this part of the CatDog theme:
Out on the road or back in town
All kinda critters putting CatDog down
Gotta rise above it gotta try to get along
Gotta walk together gotta sing this song
CatDog, CatDog, alone in the world is a little CatDog!
I’ve been thinking about the episode where they go to the dentist for the first time because my retainer from high school just broke (sorry to the group chat where I accidentally sent a picture).
Rancid Rabbit, the Dr. Spaceman of this universe, reveals that Cat’s healthy diet and good oral hygiene benefits Dog — and Cat’s teeth are wrecked by Dog’s terrible habits. Dog can’t stop eating trash off the street, so they spend the rest of the episode getting carried away sabotaging each other out of spite.

After a long day of honestly horrifying moves from both of them, they go to sleep. But then Cat crawls inside his own mouth and emerges out of Dog’s mouth to brush his teeth. Dog swallows Cat back to where he belongs.
When they wake up, Cat apologies first, then Dog, and they both go get their teeth fixed by Rancid Rabbit.
So in the end they reconcile… but then they develop rashes from all the trash they ate. It’s okay though because Rancid Rabbit is also a dermatologist. In the end, they suffer together.
I don’t think Anko and Yuki would ever sabotage each other but they do experience things together. Yuki whines if Anko hasn’t been fed and Yuki also lets Anko sleep in her bed. I guess Yuki is the benevolent one here but at least Anko is admitting he likes Yuki’s smell. They love each other. I know it.
This is all very disturbing.
